Satsuma Cafe is quickly becoming my favorite NOLA spot for amazingly fresh breakfast and lunch. Even though it’s out in the Bywater, the numerous vegetarian (and even vegan!) options and local fresh squeezed juices make the drive worthwhile every time. They also make delicious coffee drinks all day. The funky, eclectic interior of the cafe make it a fun place to go sit and eat or take advantage of the free wifi!
For those fo you from New Orleans, this little place used to be Coffea. The menu and decor has changed slightly since then, but the hipster, alternative feel is still there (it is the Bywater, after all). The owners of Satsuma are not new to the NOLA restaurant business. The husband and wife team were previously managed Lilette and worked at Surrey’s.
My eating partner (as he would like to be called), Jack, and I split the quinoa salad, which was INCREDIBLE. It was so simple and fresh; quinoa, carrots, kalamata olives, edamame, soy nuts and feta with a delicious lemon vinaigrette. I will definitely be attempting to recreate this in the near future. We also each got a sandwich. I had the roasted veggie with goat cheese and Jack tried the special BLT with avocado mash, goat cheese, and turkey. We also tried the immune booster juice with orange, grapefruit, apple, and fennel juice and grapeseed extract.
Everything on the menu is sure you have you leaving feeling better than when you went in! The menu may seem a little pricey compared to other sandwich shops, but the consistency and quality make then prices seem very fair, in my opinion – especially considering Satsuma’s support for local growers!
